Anne Klein, B.Comm, M.A., CCC

Psychotherapist and counsellor, founder of Therapy for People

Anne is a TA practitioner and the founder of Therapy for People. She combines TA with redecision therapy, attachment-focused work and Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT), an energy psychology approach she also teaches and supervises.

What Transactional Analysis is

TA was developed by psychiatrist Eric Berne. It describes three ego states that we all move between: Parent, Adult and Child. Each holds content from our past and present, and each shapes how we feel and act today.

  • Parent: the attitudes, rules and messages we took in from the adults who raised us. It can be nurturing, or critical.
  • Adult: the part of us that thinks clearly in the here and now and solves problems.
  • Child: the feelings, needs and reactions we carry from childhood, our playfulness and our old hurts.

A transaction is any exchange between two people. TA looks at which ego state is speaking and which one answers, and that is often where conversations go sideways. The same thing happens inside us. When you criticize yourself, TA names that voice your Critical Parent, and works with that part of you to soften into something more supportive.

Your script: the story decided in childhood

Berne noticed that people often live the same story again and again. The same kind of partner. The same trouble at work. The same familiar feeling at the end, like deja vu. He called this the script: "a life plan made in childhood, reinforced by parents, justified by subsequent events, and culminating in a chosen alternative."

As children, we make decisions about ourselves and the world so we can get the care we need. Perhaps anger was allowed at home and fear was not. Perhaps it felt safest to need nothing at all. These script decisions made sense then. As adults, they can keep us stuck in patterns that no longer fit.

Anne has written about script in The Story of a Life and Transforming Depression.

Redecision therapy

Anne also practises redecision therapy, which combines TA with Gestalt therapy. It works with early decisions directly, through empty chair work and by revisiting the childhood scenes where a decision was made, this time with adult awareness. The aim is to make new, life-affirming decisions in place of the old ones. Read more in Why Therapy Works.

What a TA session with Anne is like

TA begins with a contract for change: a clear agreement about what you want to be different and how you will work on it together. From there, sessions move between understanding and experience. You might map a pattern that keeps repeating, name the ego state that takes over, look at a familiar "racket" feeling and what may sit underneath it, or try an empty chair conversation with someone from your past.

Anne combines TA with Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT), a gentle body-based approach, and with attachment-focused work. The goal TA names is autonomy, which Berne described as the recovery of three capacities: awareness, spontaneity and intimacy.

Who TA may suit

TA may suit:

  • People who notice the same patterns repeating in relationships or at work.
  • Anyone living with a harsh inner critic.
  • People who want to understand why they react the way they do, and where it started.
  • Anyone who knows the feeling of deja vu in their own life: here I am again.
  • Therapists looking for their own therapy. Read about therapy for therapists.

Common questions

What is Transactional Analysis in simple terms?

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a model for understanding yourself and your relationships, developed by Eric Berne. It describes three ego states, Parent, Adult and Child, and the life script we form in childhood. In therapy, TA is used to notice old patterns and make new decisions as an adult. In Calgary, Anne Klein, CCC, offers TA at Therapy for People.

How much does Transactional Analysis therapy cost?

Individual sessions with Anne are $235 for 60 minutes, $290 for 75 minutes, $345 for 90 minutes and $460 for two hours. Coverage for counselling varies by benefit plan, so check your own plan for details. We direct bill Sun Life and Telus Health. See all fees and insurance.

Is TA therapy available online?

Yes. Sessions are offered online and in person. From November 1, 2026, in-person sessions are at Langley House, 1909 17th Ave SW in Bankview, Calgary, with free parking.

What is a life script in TA?

Eric Berne defined a script as "a life plan made in childhood, reinforced by parents, justified by subsequent events, and culminating in a chosen alternative." It is the story we decide early about how love, work and life will go. TA therapy helps you notice your script and make new decisions based on your life now.

What is redecision therapy?

Redecision therapy combines Transactional Analysis with Gestalt therapy. It works with the early decisions behind a pattern, using empty chair work and by revisiting early scenes with adult awareness, so you can make new, life-affirming decisions.

How is Transactional Analysis different from CBT?

Both look at patterns of thinking. CBT focuses mainly on present-day thoughts and behaviour, and practical skills to change them. TA looks at the ego states behind a pattern and at the life script formed in childhood, and uses redecision work to change old decisions.

Is TA related to Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Both work with different parts of the self. TA describes three ego states, Parent, Adult and Child. If you are familiar with IFS, the idea of getting to know the parts of you that speak up in hard moments will feel familiar.
