What brings families to therapy

Often one person in the family is struggling, very often a child or teenager, and everyone around them feels it. Other times the whole household is tense and nobody quite knows why. Families come in when:

  • A child or teen is anxious, withdrawn, angry or acting out, and nothing at home seems to reach them.
  • The same arguments keep happening: at dinner, in the car, over screens or homework.
  • Parents disagree about how to handle things, or one parent is carrying it all.
  • Separation or divorce has changed the shape of the family, and co-parenting is hard.
  • A blended family is still finding its way.
  • A loss, a move, an illness or another big change has unsettled everyone.
  • Generations or cultures under one roof see things very differently.

Why the whole family comes

Family therapy sees the family as a system. When one person is struggling, the way the family talks, copes and connects is part of the picture, and part of what can change. Working with everyone together means no one person has to carry the label of being the problem.

This is the heart of family systems theory, one of the approaches Divya draws on. It can feel daunting to bring everyone in. Divya does not take sides, and every person in the room gets a voice, including the youngest.

What a family session is like

Sessions are 90 minutes. That gives a family time to settle, hear from everyone, and work through something properly instead of stopping halfway. Divya helps each person say what is going on for them, and helps the others really hear it. She pays attention to the patterns between you: who speaks for whom, who steps in, who goes quiet, and where conversations usually go wrong.

The first session is about getting to know your family: what brought you in, what each person hopes will be different, and what has already been tried. From there, the work is shaped around your family and its goals.

Approaches Divya uses with families

Family systems theory looks at roles, rules and patterns across the whole family, including the generations that came before.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) helps family members notice the feelings and needs underneath conflict, and find words for them.

CBT, DBT and ACT offer practical skills for the moments in between: calming things down, managing big emotions, and acting on what matters to your family.
