What Family Constellations is

Family Constellations is a method developed by Bert Hellinger in Germany. He saw that many of the challenges people face in their lives today come from being entangled with family members from the past.

The approach sees a family as a living system with its own order. A workplace has a culture that is bigger than any one employee. In the same way, a family has an underlying field that shapes its members across generations.

Within that system, hard events do not simply disappear. Losses, exclusions, secrets and trauma can keep their influence, in quiet and surprising ways.

You belong to a family system

Every one of us came from two parents. Even if you were adopted, donor-conceived, conceived through IVF, or are estranged from one or both of them, an egg and a sperm came together to create you. That means you belong to a family system.

Go back just four generations and you have at least sixteen direct ancestors. Each of them lived a full life of love, loss, struggle, chance and resilience. So much had to unfold just as it did for you to be here.

For some people, belonging is a comfort. For others it is hard news, especially if your family hurt you and you worked hard to put distance between you. From the view of Family Constellations, belonging is not something we can opt out of, whatever the distance.

Who is missing?

Every family history holds hardship: war, famine, migration, illness, addiction, accidents, abuse and early death. When something is too much for a family to grieve, someone can end up excluded.

That person might be a child who died young, a baby lost in childbirth, a relative who was shamed or disowned, or someone whose fate was too painful to face. Over time the family may stop speaking of them at all, as if forgetting them could erase the pain.

In Family Constellations, these people still belong. A core principle is that everyone in a family system has a right to belong, regardless of what they did, how they lived or how they died.

Entanglements

When someone is excluded, a later generation may try, without knowing it, to restore the balance by taking on that person's fate. This can show up as repeating patterns, emotional struggles or difficulties in relationships.

Say a baby died and was never acknowledged. A sibling or a later descendant might carry a sense of longing or despair, out of love and loyalty to the child no one spoke of.

These unconscious identifications are called entanglements. Family Constellations understands them as expressions of love and loyalty: attempts to belong, and to include those who were forgotten.

Healing across generations

The work is not about blaming your family or reliving the past. It gently brings awareness and acknowledgment to what was missing.

The aim is that, once an entanglement is seen and honoured, you can release what does not truly belong to you and return that fate to the ancestor it belongs to. As Anne puts it, "What was taken out of love can be released with respect."

This healing does not ask you to reject your family or excuse harm. It asks only that what happened is acknowledged, and that each person is allowed to carry their own fate.
