Individual Therapy in Calgary

One-on-one therapy for what you are carrying now, and the patterns underneath it. In person in Calgary and online.

Therapy for People offers individual therapy and counselling in Calgary, in person at Langley House in Bankview and online. It is one-on-one, depth-oriented work: we work with the roots of emotional pain and long-held patterns, as well as with what you are feeling now. You can work with Anne Klein, Canadian Certified Counsellor, or Divya Sharma, Registered Social Worker.

Some people come to counselling for the first time. Others have done therapy before and are ready to go deeper. The work starts where you are.

Who you will work with

Anne Klein, psychotherapist in Calgary

Anne Klein, B.Comm, M.A., CCC

Psychotherapist and counsellor, founder of Therapy for People

Anne supports people working through anxiety, depression and work stress, and specializes in deeply healing whatever in the past holds you back. She uses Transactional Analysis, redecision therapy and Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT), and works with attachment and Mother Hunger.

Divya Sharma, Registered Social Worker in Calgary

Divya Sharma, BSc, BSW, MSW, RSW

Registered Social Worker

Divya takes an integrative approach, drawing on CBT, DBT, Emotion-Focused Therapy and ACT, with mindfulness and exposure-based work where it fits. She brings a calm, grounded presence, and her work is trauma-informed and culturally sensitive.

A depth-oriented approach

We use the word trauma broadly. We define it as any experience that felt overwhelming, beyond your capacity to handle at the time, and we believe most of us have lived through some level of it. Many of the struggles that bring people to therapy, such as anxiety, depression, relationship breakdowns and addictions, have roots in early trauma.

As children, we made decisions about ourselves and the world, often outside our awareness, to survive and to get enough love and attention. Those early decisions can be what creates difficulty in adult life now. In therapy you can revisit them with your adult awareness and make new, life-affirming ones.

If you have done therapy before, you may already understand a great deal about where your patterns come from. Insight matters, and as Anne writes in Finding Love: Attachment Matters, "awareness alone isn't enough." Depth work goes beneath what you already know, at a pace that feels manageable.

Much of the change happens in the relationship with your therapist. There you can learn to regulate your emotions, feel your feelings, think clearly and solve problems in your life outside of therapy. Our approach is gentle and relational, and it supports meaningful change without forcing the process.

Who we help

Therapy really is for everyone. Many people come simply because they want support, relief or a deeper understanding of themselves. Others come with something specific:

People also come with addictions, and with unhealthy ways of coping with their feelings. For work together with a partner or a family, Anne offers couples counselling and Divya offers family therapy.

Choosing a therapist in Calgary: Anne or Divya

Both offer individual counselling, and their approaches are different. The most important factor is the relationship: choose the person you feel safe and at ease with.

Anne Klein, CCC, works with the roots of emotional pain and long-held patterns, and supports people working through anxiety, depression and work stress. She uses Transactional Analysis, redecision therapy, Advanced Integrative Therapy and attachment-focused work, and has a particular interest in Mother Hunger. Anne also sees therapists in their own therapy.

Divya Sharma, RSW, draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, along with mindfulness and family systems thinking. She tailors her approach to each person's goals. Divya also works with men; read about therapy for men.

How individual therapy works

You and your therapist make a contract for change: what you want to be different, and how you will work on it together. The work is guided by your goals, your pace and your capacity.

Sessions are 60, 75 or 90 minutes, and Anne also offers two-hour sessions. A helpful place to begin is about 10 sessions, weekly for the first four weeks. Some people come for focused, short-term support, and others with more complex histories choose longer-term work, sometimes a year or more.

How long you come is always your choice.
