Registered Social Worker

Divya uses CBT as part of an integrative approach, alongside DBT, Emotion-Focused Therapy, ACT, mindfulness and exposure-based work. She tailors the mix to each person's goals.

What CBT is

CBT starts with a simple observation: the way we read a situation shapes how we feel and what we do next. A friend is slow to answer a text. The thought arrives, "they are upset with me", the stomach tightens, and the evening goes to worrying or apologizing. Thoughts like that come fast and feel like facts. Many of them are habits.

In CBT you learn to catch those automatic thoughts, look at them with some curiosity, and check them against what is actually happening. Then you try a different response and notice what follows. You and your therapist work on it together, as a team.

What a CBT session is like

CBT sessions have a clear shape. You might check in on the week, choose one situation to look at closely, and map out what you thought, felt and did. From there you look for other ways of seeing it, and pick something small to try before next time.

Between sessions there is usually some practice: noticing a thought pattern, writing it down, or taking a small step toward something you have been avoiding. Divya also uses exposure-based work: facing feared situations gradually, at a pace you agree on together.

Who CBT may suit

People often come to CBT with:

  • Worry, anxiety or panic.
  • Low mood, or thoughts that loop on not being good enough.
  • Perfectionism and a harsh inner critic.
  • Stress at work, or trouble switching off at night.
  • Avoiding things because they feel too uncomfortable to face.
  • Frustration or anger that flares up quickly.

CBT may suit you if you like structure, want practical tools, and are ready to try things between sessions. If you also want to understand where a pattern began, Divya's integrative approach lets CBT sit alongside Emotion-Focused Therapy, DBT, ACT or mindfulness.

CBT for couples and families

Divya brings CBT into couples and family counselling too. It offers practical tools for the moments in between: noticing the thought that sets off an argument, slowing down before reacting, and trying something new together. Couples sessions are $330 for 90 minutes. Family sessions are $350 for 90 minutes and include the whole nuclear family.

How is CBT different from ACT?

CBT looks closely at whether a thought is accurate and how to change it. ACT, a newer approach in the same family, focuses on your relationship with thoughts: making room for them while you act on what matters. Read more about ACT in Calgary.
