What depression can feel like
Depression shows up differently for everyone. Sometimes it is sadness. Often it is quieter than that, and harder to name. It can look like:
- A low mood that hangs on, or keeps coming back.
- Emotional numbness: feeling flat, or cut off from what you feel.
- Feeling empty, without quite knowing why.
- Loss of motivation, with work and everyday tasks taking everything you have.
- Losing interest in things you used to love.
- Struggling to get out of bed, and getting through the day thinking as little as possible.
- Feeling disconnected from life, and from the people around you.
- A harsh inner critic, or thoughts that loop on not being good enough.
You do not need to be in crisis to come to counselling. Many people come simply because they want support, relief, or a deeper understanding of themselves.
Working with today, and with what lies underneath
Depression counselling with Divya works on two levels. One is the immediate experience: the heaviness, the numbness, the mornings that are hard to face. The other is what may be feeding it.
That might be emotional, like grief that never had room or anger that did not feel safe to show. It might be interpersonal, like conflict at home or a relationship that has drifted. It might be the context of your life: stress at work, a loss, a move, an illness, or the pull of culture and family.
Social workers are trained to see how a person's struggles are shaped by the systems around them: family, culture, institutions and social structures. Divya brings that view to her work, with a culturally sensitive and inclusive lens.
How Divya works with depression
Divya takes an integrative approach, tailored to your goals. She brings a calm, grounded presence, and works to create a space where you feel heard and supported from the very first session. She draws on:
- CBT, to notice the thought patterns behind a low mood, like thoughts that loop on not being good enough, and practise responding differently.
- Exposure-based work, to return step by step to the people, places and plans you have been avoiding, at a pace you agree on together.
- ACT and mindfulness, to make room for heavy feelings instead of fighting them, and to take small steps toward what matters to you, even while motivation is low.
- DBT skills, for moments that feel overwhelming and emotions that are hard to steady.
- Emotion-Focused Therapy, to work with feelings that have been hard to reach or hard to hold, including grief, shame, or feeling numb and cut off.
- Family systems theory, to look at patterns in your family and closest relationships, and how they shape what you carry.
Her work is trauma-informed. When depression is bound up with family life, Divya also offers family counselling.

What kind of therapy does Divya use for depression?
Divya Sharma, BSc, BSW, MSW, RSW, has more than 11 years of experience in mental health and clinical practice. She takes an integrative approach, drawing on CBT, DBT, Emotion-Focused Therapy, ACT, mindfulness, exposure-based work and family systems theory, tailored to your goals. Her work is trauma-informed.
I feel numb more than sad. Is that something to bring to counselling?
Yes. Low mood can feel flat, empty or cut off from your feelings, and you can bring that to counselling just as it is.
Emotion-Focused Therapy, one of the approaches Divya draws on, works directly with feelings that have been hard to reach.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you are working on. A helpful place to begin is about 10 sessions, weekly for the first four weeks. Some people come for focused, short-term support, and others with more complex histories stay longer, sometimes a year or more.
How long you come is always your choice.
