Anne Klein, B.Comm, M.A., CCC

Psychotherapist and counsellor, founder of Therapy for People

Anne is a Certified AIT Teacher and Supervisor, and has used Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT) since she opened Therapy for People in 2016. She combines it with Transactional Analysis, redecision therapy and attachment-focused work.

What we mean by trauma

At Therapy for People, trauma means any experience that felt overwhelming at the time, beyond what you could handle emotionally or physically. Asha Clinton, the founder of AIT, puts it this way: "Trauma is anything that fractures human wholeness."

Sometimes it is a single event. Often it is childhood trauma, a pattern that went on for years:

  • Emotional neglect: a consistent lack of emotional responsiveness from your parents.
  • A childhood spent feeling alone.
  • Growing up with parents who were addicted, distracted or self-centred.
  • A parent who treated you as an extension of themselves.
  • Never feeling good enough for high-achieving parents.
  • Abuse, neglect, bullying, emotional manipulation, or the death of a parent or caregiver.
  • Emotional abandonment, or having your experience dismissed.

We see many of the struggles that bring people to therapy, such as depression, anxiety, relationship breakdowns and addictions, as having roots in early trauma. AIT calls this originating trauma: things that happened back then that still affect daily life now.

When the hurt began in your earliest relationships, these are often called attachment wounds. Read about attachment trauma therapy.

Anne's training

Anne is the founder and primary psychotherapist at Therapy for People. Her credentials are B.Comm, M.A. (Counselling Psychology), CCC, TA Practitioner, RCT and AIT Practitioner. Her trauma-specific training is in AIT.

  • Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT). Anne trained in AIT in 2008 and has used it since she opened Therapy for People in 2016. She is an AIT Practitioner and a Certified AIT Teacher and Supervisor: she offers AIT Basics training and AIT supervision for other therapists.
  • Transactional Analysis (TA). Anne is a TA Practitioner. TA is a model for understanding personality, relationships, and the life story we begin writing as children.
  • Redecision therapy. Anne also practises redecision therapy, which combines TA with Gestalt empty chair work.
  • Counselling psychology. Anne holds a master's degree in counselling psychology and is a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC).

How Anne works with trauma

Anne's trauma work looks beneath the symptoms for the roots of a pattern, often unresolved painful experiences from long ago, and works with them directly. She uses AIT where appropriate, alongside Transactional Analysis, redecision therapy and attachment-focused work.

AIT is a gentle, somatic (body-based) energy psychology approach. You find a sentence that describes the experience you want to work on, and place one hand on the energy centre where you feel it most. Your other hand moves through the remaining centres while you repeat the sentence, breathing and noticing what comes up: a sensation, a memory, a feeling.

Transactional Analysis and redecision therapy look at the decisions you made as a child to get the care you needed. Perhaps you decided to stifle your own needs so you would not overwhelm a parent who was already struggling. In redecision work you revisit early scenes with your adult awareness, often through empty chair work, and make new, life-affirming decisions.

Attachment-focused work makes the relationship part of the therapy. Your therapist offers a safe, steady presence where you can experience what it feels like to have someone emotionally available to you.

Trauma-informed counselling and specialist PTSD treatment

The work on this page is trauma-informed and depth-oriented. It takes seriously how painful experiences shape you, and works with their roots at a pace guided by your goals and your capacity.

Specialist treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a separate area, focused on that diagnosis. The trauma work described here is not offered as specialist PTSD treatment.

If you are looking for specialist PTSD treatment, raise it at your free meet and greet. You and Anne can talk through what you are looking for and whether this work fits.

Going at a pace that feels safe

Anne writes in Why Are We in Pain that trauma work should be approached gently and slowly, without simply re-living the trauma by talking about it over and over. AIT itself is a gentle approach.

Sometimes, in therapy, we feel worse before we feel better, as feelings we spent years covering up come to the surface. Anne writes about this in Exposing Our Roots.

Therapy for People is not a crisis service. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 any time.
