What Emotion-Focused Therapy is
Most of us learned early which feelings were welcome at home and which were not. Some got pushed down. Some came out sideways. Some still arrive bigger than the moment calls for. Emotion-Focused Therapy starts from the idea that feelings carry useful information about what matters to us and what we need.
In EFT, the work happens with the feeling in the room. Your therapist helps you slow down, notice what is happening in your body, put words to it, and stay with it long enough to understand it. EFT pays close attention to old, painful feelings such as shame or fear, and to the steadier responses, like self-compassion or healthy anger, that can be found alongside them.
EFT for individuals
In individual sessions, EFT is a place to work with feelings that have been hard to reach or hard to hold: grief that never had room, anger that feels unsafe, anxiety, a harsh inner critic, or a sense of emptiness. The pace is gentle. EFT may suit you if you:
- Feel things intensely and want to understand why.
- Feel numb, or cut off from what you feel.
- Live with a loud inner critic.
- Keep landing in the same emotional reactions.
- Are grieving, or carrying an old hurt.
EFT for couples
With couples, EFT looks at the emotional cycle underneath conflict. Often one partner pursues and the other withdraws, and both are trying to protect the relationship in their own way. EFT helps couples recognize that cycle, and the needs for closeness and safety underneath it, and find new ways to reach for each other.
Couples sessions are 90 minutes and cost $330. Read more about couples therapy in Calgary.
What an EFT session is like
An EFT session feels like a conversation that keeps returning to what you are feeling right now. Your therapist may ask you to pause on a moment, notice where you feel it in your body, or say something you have never quite said out loud. The first session is about getting to know you: what brought you in, and what you hope will change.
Divya's approach is integrative, so EFT may be combined with CBT, DBT, ACT or mindfulness, depending on your goals.
