What is Group Therapy?
Accepting Registrations for Spring 2023 Semester
Group therapy, as the name suggests, is therapy in a group setting. There is power in a group that extends beyond what can be gained in individual therapy. In the group, there is more than just the therapist to help you make positive life changes. The group is also there to support each other with changes you’ve already made.
Change can be hard, and having the support of others to cheer you on is so valuable.
The next semester of Group Therapy will begin in March 2023.
How Does it Work?
The group will meet every other week, online through Zoom. When you sign up, you are committing to be a part of the group for the entire semester. That means if you miss a group session, you are still required to pay for it regardless of the reason for missing it.
What Kind of Therapy Do We Use?
We use Redecision Therapy as the primary method of change in the group. Re-decision Therapy uses Transactional Analysis and Gestalt Therapy to support change. This method leaves the power in the client and provides the conditions for lasting and effortless changes. New, life-affirming decisions replace archaic destructive ones.
Individuals work with the therapist one-on-one in front of other group members. The group is there for support and encouragement of each other, and to witness each other’s therapy.
We also have opportunities to get support and encouragement from the group with challenges members are facing, and opportunities to learn how to process what happens within the group for the benefit of our own development. There is also an opportunity for learning and education.
Courage to Change
Group therapy can sometimes feel scary in the beginning as we learn to be vulnerable with others. Most people eventually come to look forward to the experience as the group itself becomes a comfortable place to experiment with change and experience support.
The group becomes a microcosm of the world where you can experience how others see you and feel safe in creating a new way of being.
What is the benefit?
Group Therapy can be more effective than individual therapy to help and support people to improve their lives. In individual therapy, the client and therapist are working together to help the client create the desired change. The therapist creates the conditions for change, and the client does the work.
In group therapy, other participants support each other in change, occasionally taking up roles in support of each other’s therapy. Humans are social animals and need connection. In our increasingly disconnected society, learning to be together with other people is an important skill.
